I've just had a look at my scanner, and can't find anything obvious to identify firmware version of manufacturing date printed on it, so it might not be the easiest thing in the world verifying that theory. Since reporting bug#485852, I've acquired an ScanJet 6300c which is working perfectly with the HP SANE backend. Combined with busy times at work, and the fact that I'm not a terribly good programmer, it might be a little while, but if I get the chance I'll try having a look at the source and see what I find with the 5300c. If I come across anything that improves the situation, I'll submit a patch to the bug report. All the best, -Dave.
