These links were an unfortunate error (they should only have been
generated for PATA devices) so I'd rather just retire them.

This is more interesting, but I cannot reproduce the issue on my system
(especially the lack of the underscore, are you totally sure that it was
present in the old names?).

What is the content of /etc/scsi_id.config?
