Is this the command called by JabRef? What is the significance of the
"/usr/bin/perl" part?

Maybe you could learn some more if you use a line like
"application/pdf; echo %s > ~/output", and check the output file to
see what JabRef sends to the see program?

I tried with colons in the file name, and this didn't cause any
problems on my system.
