Yup, that's why I thought you might have "pdf =" instead of "file ="
lines back from earlier times.

If I change my test file name to Achleitner:2003.pdf and the field to
  file = {with colon:/home/gregoa/Achleitner\:2003.pdf:PDF},
and leave the rest the same (use "see" and "xpdf") everything still works
as described before.

Hm, I'm using absolute pathnames in my example. *test* No, it also
works with
  file = {with colon:Achleitner\:2003.pdf:PDF},

Mysterious; any ideas, Morten?
