This is not a yaboot problem, text entry is handled by the
OpenFirmware console, so it will work as well or as badly as your
OpenFirmware terminal does.

I can indeed use shift and input characters such as < > and : along
with everything else on my keyboard.  You probably are using a
non-apple keyboard on your machine which is known to not work very
well with Apple OpenFirmware.
