There are probably two possibilities, either the bug is in the kernel's fb drivers for not supporting a better mode, or they're in how d-i loads the frame buffer modules. If you can get a better display with bterm by loading the framebuffer modules in a different order or with parameters then it could still be a bug in d-i. -- see shy jo
