It looks like this ended up being a duplicate of #479033. Sorry about that, but the latter bug hadn't appeared yet when I checked the BTS before submitting a new one. Hopefully the information from both reports will be useful. I'll leave the merging as well as the choice of the actual severity to the package maintainer.
