I am very sorry to have sent my above bug report.
On the server in question, sqwebmail had been copied over to another
directory (used by a virtual host). There, the sqwebmail binary and
other stuff had been sitting un-updated since 2006.
The recent courier update to 0.59.0-1 of course left these files
untouched. Simply updating cgi-bin/sqwebmail resolved the situation.
Of course this setup is crap. The virtual_host should read the files
where debian put them so they can be updated by the packaging system :-(
