After an update mplayer became unusable and needed configuration.
The error message was:

The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
Try appending the scale filter to your filter list,
e.g. -vf spp,scale instead of -vf spp.
FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo).
Changing "vo=xvmc,xv,x11" to "vo=xv,x11" in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
solved it.
I'm using NVIDIA drivers.
P.S.: It seems that the old config was simply destroyed by the update. I had
some font settings, which disappeared without notice...
