Just to follow up about this bug: I ran into this while trying to use fakechroot to do a debootstrap of a debian lenny system, which choked on the installation of the bash package with a message like this:
Setting up bash (3.1dfsg-9) ... chmod: changing permissions of `/etc/shells.tmp': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing bash (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 It took me a while to narrow down the cause of the failure, but what i came up with is in the original bug report. The inability to do a debootstrap under fakechroot causes serious problems for a package ("debirf") i'm working on with another developer, which is how i hit this in the first place. You can see the original trouble ticket from the debirf project here: http://cmrg.fifthhorseman.net/ticket/90 Anyway, i just wanted to note some justification for the "important" tag, if /bin/rm failing wasn't already important enough. Let me know if i can help, and thanks again for fakechroot! It's a great tool. --dkg
