After playing around with it for a bit more, I discovered that the issue was more subtle. Ordinary files are given the correct time stamps, but directories are not. I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug. :) If it's the former, perhaps a note in the read me (or a wishlist documentation bug) would be appropriate. IF the latter, it should be fixed (upstream?).
