On the other hand, apt and friends seem to have a bunch of RC bugs, so
keeping everything frozen may be saving me some troubles anyway.

I was wondering if this was the case.  I'm quite certain it crashed even
when I didn't do anything I thought would change the database (i.e.,
aptitude update, install or remove packages).
