Remember that upstream made clear that smstools is designed to be a service, so it will run as daemon and there is no sense in implementing such a feature as you request. So if a server service is not an option for you, than I recommend you to evaluate solutions that are more targetted at a "single shot" usage. Probably gammu [1] is what you search for.
