Wow, you do win a price for finding this.  Background is that we did not use
Debian's Lapack, and I decided to put a toe in the water and try the newly
built Lapack (not using gfortran),  

Guess you convinced me that this was a bad idea :)  

Will revert to R's lapack. Vincent already confirmed that it doesn't hit
Ubuntu (where we still use R's Lapack).
