I confess on examination it not present in the current angband. There was once (or was in most variants) the possibility to specify the number of characters from the edge which you considered to be the point at which the panel should be recentered. If set to zero, the panel would not recenter, until he player attempted to move out of the panel. It had some default value such as 7. At some point in the 3.0.x series, the Angband development team excised a number of settings that the community on r.g.r.angband (usenet) decided were no longer desired by anyone. Perhaps this setting possibility (I presume you want no recentering until you hit the very edge of the spanel?) fell out at that time. Or possibly this happened with the BigScreen patch which allowed the game display to be resizable, in which a fixed distance from the edge would no longer be a reasonable setting. But of course this is supposition and you've caught me out on accuracy already. >From a game strategy perspective, you really always want a significant amount of surrounding screen real estate near your character in all game-location-valid directions, or you risk instant death from off-screen enemies that is not possible to avoid. Perhaps the game should not have this facet, but it does, and has since the days of Moria in Pascal on VMS, although now the threat is typically Drolems and Dracolisks, rather than the Ancient Dragons of Moria days. If keeping the character centered at all times is sufficiently non-irritating then set center_player on, = for options, 2 for display. If you really want to be able to move to the very edge of the panel before it is recentered, then I recommend you post your rationale to the folks at rec.games.roguelike.angband, who significantly are players, but also significantly decide the steering of the game, design and UI both. -josh -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
