bsd-mailx does not create an executable /usr/bin/mail, which is required by
various packages.   This should probably be a link to /etc/alternatives/mail.

Strange. The link should be created by bsd-mailx's postinst script.
Could you please send me the output of the following commands:

 update-alternatives --display mailx
 ls -l /usr/bin/mail{,x} /etc/alternatives/mail* /usr/bin/bsd-mailx
 dpkg -l dpkg | tail -n 1
