Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.04-1
Severity: minor

xscreensaver could need some packaging love. I would like to help with
this, but I'll first open this bug to coordinate with others, and of
course to know if the maintainer would be interested in this.

The goal would be to clean up the diff.gz to make it is easier to
maintain, merge with newer upstream and work with downstream
(derivatives).

Is the package maintained in svn or git? Would you like proposed changes
as simple diffs or debdiffs? Or do it your own way? Would you like to
have separate bugs filed for every task mentioned below?

* A first task could be to break out the 00_maindiffwithorig.patch into
separate patches. Now would be a good time to change the patch system,
if ever. Is dpatch the preferred system? I am personally used to quilt
from the X packages but have no strong opinion on it.

* xscreensaver.svg: is this file autogenerated from one of the other
files or is it new (derivative) artwork? In the former case it could
maybe be generated at build time? In the latter case it could be
mentioned in debian/copyright, and the file can be shipped in debian/
and be copied in at build time.

* po/xscreensaver.pot I don't know much about .po and nls, but if this
file is autogenerated, it could maybe be generated at build time? If
not, this file could also be shipped in debian/.

* xpm files are modified: are they used at all?

* American "slang" in po/Makefile.in.in from some angry person, not
necessary to spread around.

- wrong man page section
- invalid icon/desktop sections

Looking forward to hearing your comments.
Best regards,
Tormod Volden
