If you don't want to run autostart.sh, start openbox from your .xsession instead of openbox-session. http://icculus.org/openbox/index.php/Help:Autostart Ie the point of openbox-session is to have a way to put in some startup stuff if you _don't_ use .xsession, since it's very inconvenient to switch between different session types, you have to edit the file every time instead of selecting "openbox" in the login menu. Also, your .xsession must be a bit weird if you somehow manage to induce a race condition between openbox and your background setting, do you fork openbox & and then `wait` for it at the end of the script?
