Sorry to be late to this party, but I just got my hands on an old
SunFire v480 and stumbled onto this bug report. I'm having similar
issues installing Debian onto my box. I'm an old hand at Debian, but
this is my first Sun hardware. This box is not slated for production
work (yet), so I'm happy to do anything to it that you'd like in the
way of testing.
Here are the boot failure messages I'm getting:
Etch installer (boot from CD):
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel
Loaded kernel version 2.6.18
Loading initial ramdisk (3878328 bytes at 0x4000000000 phys,
0x40C00000 virt)...
Using /dev/ttya as console.
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...
ERROR: CPU3 RED State Exception
... stack trace ...
... reboot to open firmware ...
A more recent kernel (daily snapshot Lenny build) is similar to
Bernd's; it merely prints:
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel
Loaded kernel version 2.6.22
Loading initial ramdisk (3951160 bytes at 0x4000000000 phys,
0x40C00000 virt)...
Using /dev/ttya as console.
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...
And then hangs. No automatic reboot to firmware this time, though.
If it's any consolation, OpenBSD 4.2 dies the same way, despite the
v480 being listed as a "tested" functioning system.
This is a 4-cpu system (2/2 slots filled, each slot card has 2
CPUs). 16GB of RAM total:
