I'm running thunar with german locale. The menu items
were translated by me. I guess they are labeled
somewhat different in the orginal code.

It's the last menu item in the "Edit" menu (2nd menu).
It is labeled "Einstellungen"="settings" here. In this
dialog there is a chooser widget where one can select
which view mode to use for new windows.
I don't really have a clue why this bug is not
reproducable on your machine. I already removed the
package (with --purge) and reinstalled it to see if a
broken config was causing the problem. But that didn't
fix it. Maybe there is some other problem with access
rights.
