Because there are two DPI values. One reported by "xdpyinfo | grep dots", and one reported by "xrdb -query | grep Xft.dpi". Gnome allows to set Xft.dpi, and even sets it by default if the DPI value reported by xdpyinfo is too small - which is a bug in gnome. If the user means "50 DPI", gnome should obey slavishly and allow her to shoot herself in the foot.
