If you really want to shove somewhere I suggest to put some weight on the blocker of multiarch: binutils http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=369064 This patch has been in the works more or less unchanged since before sarge but the maintainers just doesn't feel cooperative. The patch from that bug makes it possible to link when libraries are in [/usr]/lib/<arch>-<os>-<libc>/ (the multiarch dir).
