Package: util-linux Version: 2.12r-19 Severity: important My hardware is an HP Pavilion dv6000z which has an AMD Turion dual core (64-bit) processor and the nvidia MCP51 chipset. My system usually boots OK (once in a while, either X or gdm does not start properly, but I'm not sure whether this is related), but almost everytime the system tries to shut down, it hangs when saving the system clock. This problem prevents me from hibernating my laptop, and for the moment renders it largely useless.
All of the stock kernels that I have installed so far have had the same problem, they are: linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64 (ver. 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2) linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64 (ver. 2.6.20-3) linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64 (ver. 2.6.21-2) By examining the scripts in /etc/init.d I eventually tracked the problem down to hwclock. Waiting in loop for time from /dev/rtc to change <nothing further, system locks up> At this point, I need to power cycle the machine. In trying to find out how to resolve the problem, I came across a site (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4054045.html?sid=379ea62d4e3453465865306212e410e1) where someone claims that the problem has to do with the 64-bit version of hwclock. He claims that when he tries the 32-bit version of the hwclock binary, it works much better. (He was using a 2.6.17 kernel, but I don't know whether that makes any difference).
