There have been interest in bootlog and init in general (seems it fires up from lsb-init functions inclusion).
I understand that bootlogd does not fit well, but was somewhat surprise by your telling about kernel support. Did you already have a though of the concept ? Coudl a hook in fbcon as does fbsplash fit well ? The last data about this i found was debconf2 presentation which only told that logging was wanted ...
