Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 8.18.6-1
Severity: serious
Justification: 2
*** Please type your report below this line ***
Steps to reproduce:
------------------
1. Install Debian Sarge on a IBM/Lenovo T43p Notebook with a ATi FireGL
Graphics Card
2. Install the fglrx-driver for the Graphics Card
3. (At this point everything's fine)
4. Update /etc/apt/sources.list replacing Sarge with Etch sources
Contents of the sources.list file:
deb ftp://130.59.10.35/mirror/debian etch main
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all
deb http://people.debian.org/~kay/debian/ stable php5-xdebug
5. apt-get update
6. apt-get dist-upgrade
Problem description:
-------------------
The dist-upgrade failed at x11-common. It showed a configuration screen
for
x11-common which explains that it failed and that one should remove
all files from /usr/X11R6/bin/ and then try to install the package
again.
Page showing the config message and errors:
http://tools.gallery2.org/pastebin/1381
/usr/X11R6/bin/ had the following files:
aticonfig fgl_glxgears fglrxconfig fglrxinfo fglrx_pplay
fglrx_xgamma
/fireglcontrol fireglcontrolpanel
First I tried to move those files away and calling apt-get dist-upgrade
again.
Which failed (see the above mentioned pastebin).
Then I put the files back in place.
I tried the suggestd apt-get install -f which failed with the same
issues.
I tried removing fglrx-driver with
apt-get remove fglrx-driver fglrx-control-qt3
but that failed (see http://tools.gallery2.org/pastebin/1387) with a
huge list of packages and the suggestion to run apt-get install -f to
resolve the problem. Which wouldn't work either.
Workaround:
----------
To finish the upgrade, I uninstalled the packages fglrx-driver and
fglrx-control-qt3 with:
dpkg -r --force-depends fglrx-driver && dpkg -r --force-depends
fglrx-control-qt3
This removed most files from /usr/X11R6/bin/.
I had to manually remove the file
rm /usr/X11R6/bin/fireglcontrolpanel
Then I could run:
apt-get install -f
And finally I could complete my upgrade to Etch:
apt-get dist-upgrade
