I installed wmctrl and was mystified why it didn't work, it only
displayed a partial list of windows.
I found the debian bug report and so I tried this:

I have a 32bit version of Debian installed in chroot for the odd program
that isn't aviable in 64bit version. I installed xterm and wmctrl into
that and it worked perfectly.

so it's a 64bit problem.

Then I compiled wmctrl from source in the regular 64bit debian and it
had the same exact problem as the debian-supplied version.

So I applied the patch supplied to you in the bug report and it worked
after a recompile it worked perfectly.

PS:
If you need a 64bit machine I suggest:

Celeron D 331 proccessor (very inexpensive)
or
Pentium D 915 or 925 proccessor for the lowest proccessor that both
supports Intel VT (for Linux KVM) and is dual core.
or
Core Duo 2 (Conroe core supports VT) for good performance and low power
requirements.

along with a Asus or Intel motherboard with 945G chipset.

This will get you a good performing workstation with Sata, Gigabit
ethernet, and onboard graphics that provide decent 3d and 2d support
(more then adequate for Compiz/Beryl), surround sound support, and is
fully supported by open source drivers.

Thanks!
