It wouldn't surprise me too much if the ia64 port has bit-rotted a little.
I'm not sure how many people are using that architecture with AFS.

Thank you for the additional information.  I want to look it over more
thoroughly and try to understand what's happening, but I don't have the
time to do so immediately.  I'll try to get to that soon, and if you
haven't heard from me in a week, please feel free to ping me.

(In the meantime, you may also want to consider raising this on
openafs-info and seeing if anyone else has any ideas, although the
installation problem may be due to the Debian-specific patches to rename
the module to openafs instead of libafs.)
