Note that "no hardware OpenGL acceleration" does not mean "no GLX". An X server with the nv driver still has the GLX extension. You can easily test gnubg against a server without the GLX extension by using Xnest, with the commands I suggested above; that test should work on any machine. - Josh Triplett
