What is the effect of changing true to false on the previous patch?
Might get what you want. This is a guess, as I didn't read the code,
just the patch.

I suggest to disable the updates in Debian completely and open the above
as a feature request for upstream. After that feature is applied,
re-enable the automatic updates.

Although I personally think there shouldn't be any updates which do not
come from apt-get.

p.s.
I don't see a reason to delay 2.5.0.4 because of Etch... sadly - we
don't know when Etch will be released.
