Did the package ever ship such a large /etc/magic though? If it did,
then I suppose my /etc/magic was some kind of artifact of that time.

Well, I didn't really mean to use that /etc/magic file, so unless it's
supposed to work with any old magic file and you want to find out why
this one breaks, feel free to close this bug.
