Sure - the affected machines were running etch / amd64 so the version installed from experimental worked just fine. The sarge backport version installed on several other systems we have which use this as well so it works there, too.
The only enhancement I'd add would be having DPKG optionally generate /etc/default/mpt-statusd using the output of mpt-status -p since a couple of our boxes have the only controller located on ID #2 - and this is a couple seconds of work to add...
