Hi,

        This probably has nothing to do with tar, but that is the
 package which is the most likely candidate. I think the issue is
 either file system corruption, running out of disk, or, somehow, a
 problem with tar.

        In any case, the tar invocation is pretty standard, so this is
 not a kernel-package issue; tar ought to work anyway.
