Hi Edward, thanks for your analysis. This bug is definitely not AMD64 specific, as I can reproduce it on two i386 machines. When you have timidity installed, libsdl-mixer doesn't attempt to use the hardware synth, which is why you don't get the crash anymore. The author of "chocolate-doom" can reproduce a crash similar to this with his port, so I think it's a libsdl-mixer issue (and will merge this into the bug reported there already). The fact it sounds horrible is most likely the low quality of freepats; if so, please report a bug there.
