Indeed (I use Gnome 2.14), but Esc+Tab doesn't work either (at least
in Emacs snapshot, this is translated to M-TAB which is bound to
flyspell-auto-correct-word).
I suspect many users have this problem with their window manager.
Perhaps you could put this and my code snippet in README.Debian?
I'll post this upstream as well.
