Missing libgpod features/bugs/incompatibilities with your device might be the cause of your problem. Btw, are you sure you downgraded libgpod0? Try other libgpod frontends like gtkpod to test if they have similar problems.
Btw, I compiled amarok 1.4.4-2 against libgpod 0.4.0-1 from experimental for you. I made packages available at [1].
