Sorry, I left off that I think I have a solution. I can just call compileall.compile_dir() directly using the Python interpreter, which presumably knows where compileall.py is since it's part of the standard library. I've reworked the postinst again and tested it with a "real" python, (i.e. /usr/bin/python->python2.3), with no "real" python (i.e. /usr/bin/python does not exist) and with alternatives (using your python2.1 example). It seems to work fine. I will upload later today. The upload will close the bug.
