I think this bug is still present, unfortunately I couldn't reproduce it. I grabbed xchat-gnome 1:0.15-0ubuntu2 which has the following change: * fixed a tab vs whitespace typo in debian/control to please pbuilder but the control file still has an embedded tab at the exact same place you mentionned.
