Ah, now I got it - and I can also explain it now :)
The messages which I did paste to the bug report was from a subsequent
`dselect install' - after a downgrade back to the previous version
inbetween (to get a clean block to paste into the bug report - well,
obviously it was a bit too "clean" then ;)). This, in turn, means the
message has already been shown to me and was flagged seen in the debconf
db. And thus the pre-config failed in subsequent attempts.
When I remove the seen flag in the debconf db, the config-script doesn't
fail in pre-config stage but shows me the message. However, the postinst
does still fail even then, of course.
