That is most likely a bug in your gdm. Ratpoison ships a menu file
to tell each program offering a menu to display it as available
window managers, which gdm and kdm did not use in the past.
The version what is in breezy according to packages.ubuntu.com
had a workaround by advertising itself as gnome/kde window manager
by a desktop file, but as that is incorrect (it is no gnome nor
a kde window manager, but a stand alone window manager) and as it
might confuse display managers using both sources, I removed that hack.

You can try if ratpoison is properly registered as window manager by
looking into something supporting to start a window manager. The
menu in ratpoison that is available when 9menu is installed should list
ratpoison in the Window Managers sections, as it should be shown in
other window managers supporting switching window managers on the fly,
like icewm, fvwm. (Or almost any other window manager that is either
too primitve (wm2, twm) or does not like good old working systems
(most gnome and kde window managers, I guess).

Oh, I'll have to look into this. Some path might be wrong. (This should
only lead to left over files when removing, this cannot cause a missing
menu item)
