Just a quick note, I noticed this bug using rc-alert. mbr is still useful, at least in one specific case, which is when using grub and a Highpoint HPT366 or 370 device (and possible later devices)
Basically, these IDE/RAID controllers use a sector on the disk which is also one of the sectors grub tries to install its stage 1.5 loader into when installed as the MBR. The trivially easy solution is to install grub as the boot sector on your /boot (or /) partition, and install mbr onto the MBR.
