The default mplayer.conf does not seem to be usable. vo is set to 'Unsupported', so I have to manually change it to 'xv' in order to get mplayer to play anything. I think a sensible default would be 'xv,x11' (assuming that I didn't just fabricate the memory of being able to specify fallback video modes by putting them in a comma-separated list).
