Are you able to play your known good mp3 with alsaplayer, mpg321 or similar? Make sure nothing is muted in alsamixer. Are you a member of group audio? $ id Hmm, all relevant packages are installed (etch versions) and I don't know yet, what is wrong. Did your sound ever works with older versions (kernel, alsa)?
