I have just created a tunnel to my local nntp provided through a remote host,
by executing:

ssh -L 9000:<news server>:119 <gateway>

Could you try this please? (Obviously you need to substitute port 119 for 23),
and actual hostnames for the placeholders.

Once that is set up, you should be able to telnet to localhost port 9000 and
see your news servers greeting.

You mean, you receive email over the samme tunnel as you use to read news?
