  I'm glad you have a fast computer.  If the messages bother you, I
suggest you close your eyes for a few seconds.

  The sarge version was buggy in many ways, including that progress
displays tended not to appear.  This is very annoying if you're using
a computer that takes more than a few seconds to load the cache (and
yes, there are computers like this out there and in use).

  I might consider not printing messages unless they've been up for a
half-second or so, but that seems likely to annoy people whose computers
take 0.51 seconds to get through each phase.

  This is probably a side effect of bug-fixes in the behavior of
searches and lists.  I've added a hack that sticks the highlight
at the top of the screen after a search, since I guess it's a bit
better there (you can see the newly selected item under the search
dialog).

  Anyway, all this is academic for etch, since base is now frozen or
nearly-frozen.
