  Ah...it looks like I need to apologize.  There was a suggestion in your
bug report that I apparently forgot about, namely the idea of using a
single message and a spinner.

  I'm not planning to collapse the messages into one message -- they're
still useful on slower systems, but it might make the bar less visually
distracting if I disable the colorful progress effect and use a spinner
instead (as you suggested), maybe with the current percentage over on
the right-hand side of the screen.

  The real problem with the progress bars, IMO, is the way they run from
0 to 100% multiple times for a single task.  Unfortunately, the design
of the apt libraries precludes doing anything more sensible with them.  :-(
