I had tried the size 16 font, but I guess had had not got the console
properly restarted to effectuate the change.
If you have too much time on your hands then you may consider
restarting the consoles automatically when running dpkg-reconfigure
console-setup :).

I belive that with font size 16 the screen size will be correct.
Please confirm if this is so. You can use
# dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
in order to choose font size 16. Then invoke
# setupcon
as root.
