The problem there is the confusion that would result from making the
Balance column editable. That could cause havoc with new users.

Tagging this "wontfix" because a minor enhancement for one user is
likely to cause major aggravation for a lot of new users and thereby a
lot of problems for upstream.

All I can suggest is having an on-screen calculator open alongside gnucash.

If you would prefer a simple calculator within gnucash (alongside the
Financial Calculator), please file a new bug report. Such an idea has
been put to upstream before but nothing has come of it yet. I can only
guess it wasn't seen as a priority in the transition to Gtk2. A fresh
report may elicit a more favourable response this time.
