OK, it's been a really long time since this bug was reported but gnucash
is now on version 2.0.1-2 and the behaviour has changed somewhat.

Well, now gnucash2 does not give you the message box, it just doesn't
allow you to add a transaction - not sure if that is an improvement really.

I've forwarded this bug upstream, slightly modified to describe the
situation in gnucash2.
