I looked into this, and the most irritating problem is that the function used to implement the terminal password input in v3, getpass, is now obsolete (removed, in fact, in POSIX.1-2001). That in itself, plus the fact that VNC 4 is a C++ rewrite of VNC 3 (which is in C) might be the reason. (I didn't know any of this until now.) I guess I need to find some tried and tested code from somewhere (even maybe the getpass implementation in glibc) that does the same job.
