After discussing with upstream, it was decided that we are going to keep exim's current behavior as we do not want to break compatibility with software that expects sendmai-like behavior. I have, however, documented the issue and the possible fix in comments in the maildir_home transport. This bug will be closed upon upload of the new package version. Please object here or re-open the bug if you disagree with this solution.
